Positivity: Is Yours Toxic, Fearful, or Healthy?

leadership Feb 26, 2021

This past year has been very challenging, to say the least. Unfortunately, I’ve seen some people in the personal development sphere acting like all you need to do is Think Positive, as if breaking down and struggling with fear and grief and anger is some kind of character flaw.

It’s not. It’s human.

On the flip side, there’s also been the backlash against this so-call Toxic Positivity. People accuse the Don’t Worry, Be Happy crew of being self-centered and lacking in empathy, yet that, too, is overly simplistic.

See, sometimes the reason people shy away from acknowledging heavier, “negative” emotions isn’t because they don’t care. It’s because they care too much, and they’re afraid that if they allow themselves to feel the lurking fear, grief, anger, shame, and/or guilt, they’ll drown in it. I call this type of avoidance Fearful Positivity.

What’s the difference between Toxic Positivity and Fearful...

Meet Colleen Biggs: Pioneer of change for Women

leadership Feb 25, 2021

As seen in Voyager Magazine: Shout Out Arizona Feature

https://shoutoutarizona.com/meet-colleen-biggs-pioneer-of-change-for-women/

We had the good fortune of connecting with Colleen Biggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colleen, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is other supportive women. The success of Lead Up for Women has solely been in my drive and passion to lift all women by being the example and in return having them lift me. We can walk through life ignoring the fact that women judge, compete, and downright fight over some of the most trivial topics, or we can agree to own the truth and take charge to make a significant change to how women work together. Lead Up for Women was born with this in mind. How can we create an accepting world, disrupt the current landscape, and instill lasting change for women to dominate the entrepreneurial market? That’s where my journey began!

What should our readers...

#Thrive Thursday: Meet Mary Grothe, Founder & CEO What is your story

What is your story? Or in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?

How much info do you want? Times quite a story to unpack me, but I will keep it brief. I was raised in the performing arts as a triple threat, actor, singer, and dancer. Dancing was my passion of the three. I was on the stage from age 3 to age 18. My parents owned the performing arts school. Unfortunately, they weren’t great business owners, racked up a ton of debt, and we ended up having to flee the small town in Northwest Indiana and “runaway” to Boulder, CO, when I was 14 years old. My parents were poor, and my mom was an alcoholic. The abuse was difficult to bear growing up. I started working full-time and fully supporting myself at age 15 and was on my own by my senior year of high school.

Unfortunately, I got in a car accident 1 month before graduation, and my dream of dancing professionally was shot. I entered into 4 dark years of trying to find myself without my...

#Thrive Thursday: Meet Charice Paoli , “Learn To Play” Hockey Director

thrive thursday Feb 18, 2021

What is your story? Or in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?

Growing up as a young student-athlete, I was lucky to have many fantastic teachers and coaches who positively influenced my life. Consequently, they inspired me to pursue undergraduate degrees in elementary and secondary education. Becoming a classroom teacher was a very rewarding journey because I was given opportunities to teach various grade levels and subjects. Most notably, after I completed my graduate degree in computer science, I enjoyed teaching basic coding skills and creating various STEM projects to elementary school students in the final years of my formal teaching profession.

As soon as school ended, I would head off to one of the local rinks to begin a few hours of coaching each night. For me, the ice quickly became an extension of the classroom, and being able to make a career out of hockey and supporting children/teens now is a dream come true. Over the years, I was...

#Thrive Thursday: Meet Alice Chun, founder and CEO of Solight

thrive thursday Feb 11, 2021

What is your story? Or in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?

As a little girl growing up in Seoul, Korea, and then upstate New York, I spent many days learning how a simple fold can become structured. Origami forms were taught by my mother, who also taught me how to sew my own clothes. I was always creative, fascinated by design, structure, and forms. I studied architecture at Penn State, where I obtained my undergraduate degree and earned my Masters in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.

With emerging trends in material technology resulting in smarter, lighter, faster, sustainable fabrication, I started to sew solar panels to the fabric as early experiments for harnessing solar energy with softer, malleable material. I became focused on solar technology and finding ways to create clean energy solutions upon learning my son Quinn was diagnosed with asthma.

While teaching as a...

What is your story?  Or in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?

I was born to a Chinese father who was a physician and a German mother who was an operating room nurse. My parents met at the hospital. I graduated second in my class from high school but then decided to rebel at 19. At that point, I dropped out of college and got married. And then had three children, and by the time I was 23. I had to go back to school and finish college. Then I ended up divorced in my late 20s. To put food on the table and take care of my children, I decided to go back to law school.  From there, I started working for a family law attorney and then started my own practice.  In 2013, I then wrote a bestselling book on divorce and started doing some marketing and media around that. In 2017, totally burned out from practicing family law for so long, I decided to merge my practice with two other partners to focus on doing other things. In 2019, I wrote a second...

#Thrive Thursday: Meet Carmen Payne, SOAR! Transformational Life Coach

What is your story? Or, in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?

I was born to a teenage mother who was frog marched down the aisle to marry my biological father. My arrival into this world was scandalous for my very Mediterranean Roman Catholic family back in the early ’70s. My family at the time were recently emigrated from Malta, living in England. Shortly after my sister was born, about 18 months later, our parents moved back to Malta. This was short-lived, as my father was abusive, and our mother made the decision to move back to England to have the support of her family. Just before my tenth birthday, my mother was killed crossing the road leaving my sister, and by this time, our baby brother and I orphaned. After being in the foster care system, we were eventually adopted by our mother’s sisters and their husbands.

This whole experience formed who I am today and how I show up in the world.
