What is your story? Or in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?
I am one of the lucky ones to have led a very blessed life, it doesn’t mean it was without struggle, but I look back on all aspects with gratitude because it has made me who I am today. I was born in Australia, raised in Japan, and moved to Canada 30 years ago for what I thought would be Whistler's season and have never left! I was the oldest of 4 kids, and at 13, my father suddenly died of blood clots after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. I became the second parent, as my sisters were on 3 and 5. I grew up fast but somehow had the wisdom to appreciate that while losing my Dad sucked (as I was a Daddy’s girl), he was still with me, sitting on my shoulder, guiding me. I also appreciated that I had been fortunate to have him in my life for 13 years; my youngest sister only had him for 3 years. 2 years after his passing, we moved back to Australia; I poured myself into my studies and University and graduated 2 days before I turned 21 and then took off traveling the world as all Aussie kids do! By the time I arrived in Whistler 18 months later, I had packed more experiences into my life than many do in a lifetime, and again I was completely grateful that I had the opportunity to do this. I set about getting a “real job” now and started my Corporate career, which lasted 24 years. I am married, have University aged daughters, now have been a Girl Guide (Girl Scout) leader for 17 years, and love sharing my travel bug with my family and the girls in Scouting. I’ve taken girls on trips to NYC, Europe and had an Ecuador trip planned for March 2021, which is now being pushed back to 2022, plus camps around BC and across Canada. I’ve also started a non-profit, Girls Matter, to help keep girls in school in Uganda, as I believe the answer to bringing developing countries out of poverty. An interesting stat indicates that if India could educate just 1% more girls, they’d grow their GDP by $5.5bn. Educating girls means we break the cycle of them being married off as teenagers, having their own children, and repeating their mothers' poverty cycle. It’s a simple solution, but not an easy one. At Girls Matter, we believe education should be a right, not a privilege, and that we can break the poverty cycle 1 girl, 1 family, 1 village at a time.
What message do you promote?
That our medical system is broken, I call it sick care, not “health care.” It’s not the doctor’s fault. It is the broken system, and between the medical system, Big Pharma, and our food industry all being “for-profit,” decisions are made based on shareholder return and not optimizing human health. This has resulted in the world being the sickest it has ever been, the most stressed out and sleep-deprived, too, with chronic illness on the rise and people struggling to find answers. I’m here to tell you THERE IS ANOTHER WAY. Using the science of functional medicine labs, we can see what is truly going on inside your body and understand the root cause of your symptoms and then be able to remove toxicities, support deficiencies, and make some nutritional and lifestyle changes to guide your body back into balance for TRUE and lasting healing. No more masking of symptoms with drugs, to have more symptoms crop up as a result and be offered yet another drug. The human body is designed to self-heal, BUT in today’s world, we sometimes get so far away from “balance” that it needs some support getting back into balance so it can self-heal. I am here to guide your journey back to balance, full healing, and getting you back to fully living the life you love.
In what capacity do you LEAD UP in your community?
Speaking out so that people know there is another way – to provide people the options they are looking for and the education they need to understand how their body works and how they got to where they are and how to get back to full health. The medical system doesn’t want you to know this is even an option, as it doesn’t generate any profit for them….but I want you to know these options because I want you to achieve optimal health, just like I have been able to do. A woman with breast cancer is worth $800,000 ~ $1.2 million to the system; a woman without breast cancer is worth nothing….this is why we aren’t taught at school or in public health how to take preventative action in our own health.
In business and/or in life, share a struggle you overcame that other women can relate to.
I was in the corporate world for 24 years, and then big fish bought little fish, and I was given an hour to clear out my desk and not a word of thanks. At that moment, I knew I never wanted to work for anyone else again AND that whatever I did next had to be of service. I then surrendered to the Universe to guide me to my purpose, and I was, though both my daughters getting concussions 2 months apart, and my learning and guiding their healing. In my research, I discovered nutrition was an overlooked piece of concussion healing, and I also learned about the gut-brain connection and that the gut is our second brain. Both girls fully recovered, one took about 4 months, the other about 10 months as they were very different concussions, and I discovered a love of working in this space. I went back to school and, over the next 3 years, completed my Health Coaching, Mastery Coaching, and Integrative Health Practitioner Certifications. As I look back, I see other health struggles our family has overcome by choosing to turn to holistic medicine and functional medicine labs to guide us. Both my daughters had food intolerances impacting their learning, and I struggled with hormonal imbalances that triggered migraines. I had no idea back then when I was learning and following this path, and I would end up in this field of work as my “2nd career”!.
What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do?
Seeing my clients’ relief when they find me, and know they are in good hands on their way to regaining their health. By the time they find me, they are often feeling alone in their struggle, without the time or energy to figure it out on their own. When they find me, they know they are no longer alone, and they can relax into being guided, which allows their body to start healing. The body cannot heal when in a stressed-out state.
How do you SHOW UP?
I show up every day, ready to be of service, open to continued learning, as one can never know everything, knowing that I have found my life’s purpose and honored to step into fulfilling what I was put on this earth to do. It means I have become a disruptor of the current medical system. I am not one that has ever enjoyed arguments, BUT I am willing to show up and stand out on this topic, as it is so broken, failing people in their health journey, and people need to know so that they can make the right choice for them in their healing journey.
If you could give one piece of advice for women who are entering the workforce or launching their own business, what would that be?
Prioritize your health, as if you don’t have your health, how can you build a business, raise a family, perform at your best? When you look after YOU and your health first, then you can go out and create whatever your heart desires. The idea of if I get sick, I will go to the doctor to be given a drug to cure me doesn’t work, and we have to change that mentality. Instead, we have to start prioritizing our health so that we don’t get sick. I love how the medical system was set up in Ancient China; the doctors were not paid if their villagers got sick. Imagine if our medical system was set up like this today! Instead, our doctors get paid and feed off their patients being sick now.
