What is your story? Or in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?
I was born to a Chinese father who was a physician and a German mother who was an operating room nurse. My parents met at the hospital. I graduated second in my class from high school but then decided to rebel at 19. At that point, I dropped out of college and got married. And then had three children, and by the time I was 23. I had to go back to school and finish college. Then I ended up divorced in my late 20s. To put food on the table and take care of my children, I decided to go back to law school. From there, I started working for a family law attorney and then started my own practice. In 2013, I then wrote a bestselling book on divorce and started doing some marketing and media around that. In 2017, totally burned out from practicing family law for so long, I decided to merge my practice with two other partners to focus on doing other things. In 2019, I wrote a second book, this one on negotiation, and the foreword written by the great Robert Schapiro. In 2020 I started a YouTube channel where I discuss negotiating with narcissists. My channel grew to 100,000 subscribers in just 10 months.
I would say what makes me who I am is perseverance, fortitude, creativity, and the drive to help as many people as I possibly can. I have had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get where I am today, and I love giving other people a helping hand to show them the path from a life of drama, trauma, and chaos to step into a life of freedom, possibility, and purpose.
What message do you promote?
That regardless of how toxic or difficult the relationship is that you’re dealing with, whether romantic or in a business setting, there is a way to negotiate successfully so that you can walk away unscathed and still have a fair settlement.
In what capacity do you LEAD UP your community?
I lead up my community by giving them hope and showing them the path out of toxic relationships. I give people step-by-step resources that actually give them guidance on exactly what to do. There is no other lawyer on the planet who is doing what I am doing right now. My YouTube channel has garnered over 100,000 subscribers and 6 million views in just 10 months, which tells me that there are a lot of people who are in desperate need of good information on how to negotiate with narcissists.
In business and/or in life, share a struggle you overcame that other women can relate to...
I got divorced in my 20s, and I had three little children. I had to figure out a way to put a roof over their heads and provide them with some sort of life. I went back to law school when I had no money whatsoever. I went on 100% student loans. I had no guarantee that I would even get a job after law school, but I had faith, and I believed in myself.
I’ve also had to deal with naysayers and toxic personalities throughout my life, just as everyone has. I have figured out a way to navigate and negotiate those situations to preserve my own mental health and still feel whole and complete.
What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do?
I get emails every single day telling me that I have saved people's lives. Every day I hear that something that I have taught someone showed someone, or my resources have helped someone escape a toxic relationship.
How do you SHOW UP?
I give my all to everything that I do. Whether it’s making my YouTube videos, going live on one of my social media channels, doing a webinar for people, or in the programs and resources that I offer, I give every single thing that I can. My heart and soul is in everything that I do. I want to be sure the people have access to the best information that they possibly can.
If you could give one piece of advice for women who are entering the workforce or launching their own business what would that be?
Don’t listen to the naysayers. And also, remember that people think what you tell them to think. So make sure that you’re projecting out there that you have confidence and that you know what you’re doing. People will believe you. Remember that you and you alone define your value.
