What is your story

My life has been an exciting adventure! I’m one of four girls raised on a 5-acre farmette, and we sure loved our animals growing up.  I was always daddy’s little helper doing chores, mowing, and assisting with changing the oil, etc.  I started babysitting at a young age for a couple that owned a shoe store.  Once I was able to drive, they asked me to start working in their store. They taught me so much about sales, which started me out in my sales career.  While I was working at the shoe store, I met my husband, Michael.  We got married a year later, and I was only 19 and have now been married 36 years.  We had a rough start in our second year of marriage; we lost our first home to a house fire.  Thank the Lord we didn’t have any children at the time but did have Labradors that woke us up at 3 am in the morning.  It was so scary, and we barely got out.  It was a life-changing experience for us!  It taught us that material things are just not that important and just being safe was. My husband and father-in-law were in construction, so Mike was the general contractor rebuilding our home.  While we were rebuilding our home, I found out we were pregnant. We had our son Zachariah and then 16 months later had our daughter Katelyn.  They are both in their 30’s now with successful jobs.  Zach has been married five years to our daughter-in-law Carly and Katie is dating and currently getting her master’s for a nurse practitioner. Mike and I now have six dogs, including five Jack Russell’s and one West Highland Terrier. We currently travel in our RV, showing the Jack Russell nationwide.

Three years later, after we rebuilt our home, we continued to build and sell a total of three homes.  When we were building our 3rd home in 1996, the Vice President of mortgage offered me a position as a loan officer.  He said I would be an asset with all my construction knowledge, so, since 1996, I started my career in mortgage lending!  Boy, has it changed, but I still love what I do!!

What message do you promote

Make dreams come true!  Build relationships, work with clients, and help them get the best loan possible.

In what capacity do you LEAD UP in your community?

For 30 plus years, I worked and was involved in several community events in a small town called Sandwich, but for the past three years, I started working from home and was not as involved in the small town community as I used to. I’m now licensed in 22 states, so my community has grown.

In business and/or in life, share a struggle you overcame that other women could relate?

In 2019 I signed up for a Mastermind Class.  We were asked to purchase the book THE SLIGHT EDGE and read a few chapters before class.  And at each class, we’d talk about what we’d read.  I want you to know that I was not a reader prior to this class, but I was okay with the idea that this might push me to read.  To be honest, I was always a little jealous of the readers who talked about a great idea they got from a book or how much they loved an author.  During one of our meetings, my instructor Jeanie asked what our slight edge would be, and I said, “I wish I read more, but I don’t have time.”

She gave me a look, and you must know her to understand this LOOK.  She was a former high school English teacher, and I know she was one of those teachers that no one messed with.  She looked and probed, “What do I mean?”

“Well, I wake up at 5:30 and go to the gym. Then when I get home, I do dishes, housework, and take care of the dogs, and then I have to start work.”

I was actually feeling kind of proud of all I accomplished. I’m not sure if any of you have heard of the miracle morning, but I thought I was nailing my morning routine... up early, getting in my exercise.   She gave me another look and asked, “You’re saying there’s no time in there to read... let’s say ten pages a day?”

Now we were in uncomfortable territory.  I had a story ready.   I explained that even as a child, I’d never been a reader.  And that I was raised on a 5-acre farmette and had three sisters, and I was the second oldest, and I was daddy’s little helper.  He told everyone what a great help I was to him, and my sister Sherry who was the reader...well daddy praised her for how well she read.” I stopped, and Jeanie

repeated what I’d just said.   I don’t know how to describe the “AHA” moment that washed over me, but it hit me that I wasn’t a reader today because I had always been the outside worker.  I got praise for helping dad. Even my love language is “acts of service.” I stood there, and a feeling overwhelmed me, and I actually started to cry.    I realized that didn’t have to be who I was now.  I thought, “YOU CAN CHANGE.”

And in fact, I did.  First I changed my MIRACLE MORNING ROUTINE and then….I changed my life.  The Slight Edge suggests you read ten pages a day. I realized if I’m getting up at 5:00, I can make time to read.  That decision was made in Sept. of 2019.   After reading just ten pages a day, I’d like to share that I have read 47 books so far.  Before this, I could probably count the number of books I read in my whole life, on one hand.

Right after starting my commitment, it was a Sunday, and I was listening to a sermon on the radio. The pastor suggested that reading 3 minutes of the Bible each day would change your life.  I thought if I’m willing to read ten pages a day, surely I could add in 3 minutes with the Bible.  In the back of my head, I thought….I wonder how many people can say they have read the entire Bible?  So I started in the Old Testament in September of 2019, and for those of you who know….. I’m currently in the book of Nehemiah.

I also want to share that one day soon after I started reading, I went to my folk’s house and shared how I’d felt about helping dad and not really reading, and they really felt bad.  I reassured them they’d done NOTHING wrong and, in fact, had given me a great work ethic.

Only a week later, I stopped by their house, and I noticed the Bible sitting by my dad’s chair. I smiled as he shared that he’d started reading the Bible too.  He also told me that one of his wishes, before he dies, was for us four girls to return to faith.  And as he said it, he had tears in his eyes.  Fast forward two years and my folks have gone back to attending church regularly and but a few weeks ago, I was baptized with my dad watching.   He is 82, and the look he gave me with the hug he gave me… means the world to me.

What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do?

Building lifetime relationships and consulting clients with a BIG life change decision.  Plus, I’ve been in the business long enough that I’m helping their children get into their first homes.

How do you SHOW UP?

BOLD describes exactly how I SHOW UP!  Because of my mind shifts, there have been BOLD changes in my life and how I feel about it.  My perspective on what I do every day and why I do it. I’m currently a Sales Manager for a team of 4 loan officers, and this made me think of how I SHOW UP for them every morning during their Stand-up call, which I call it WIN THE DAY.  After my Miracle Morning, I am so energized and ready to take on the world!  I love sharing ideas with them of things I read that morning.  I currently finished the Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, which is my second favorite read.   I am trying to change their mind shift like mine has changed!
