5 Ways to Address Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

By Esme Oliver

Ever since I graduated from college, I have worked in high-pressure environments with a lot of powerful men.  The vast majority of men who I interacted with on a daily basis were my superiors. I have worked in Congress, law firms, a Fortune 100 company and a startup throughout my career. As different as each job sounds, I had one thing in common at all of them. I was at the receiving end of sexual harassment at each job.

Believe it or not, I can say that I have been sexually harassed at almost every job I have ever had. However, in the wake of the #metoo movement, this fact probably won't surprise you or anyone else.  Although I was young and naive when a lot of this happened, upon the precipice of 40, I did eventually work up the courage to file a lawsuit against my harasser -- and I won. This was a daunting undertaking, but I realized it was something I personally needed to do. Quite simply, it...

What is your story? Or in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?

I am the Executive Vice President & Partner of 3E Public Relations – a public relations, social media and content marketing agency based in New Jersey, where I was born and raised. I grew up with a passion for creative writing that my parents encouraged by reading and critiquing my poems and short stories and submitting them for writing contests. In high school, I served on the editorial staff of our student newspaper and developed an interest in journalism. With my eyes on a career writing for a major newspaper or national magazine, I headed to Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT as a journalism major. During my sophomore year, I registered for a PR 101 course – a mandatory prerequisite for all communications majors. My professor had worked for numerous agencies throughout her career and had a passion for the field that was infectious. She motivated me to take more public relations...

Five Clear-Cut Ways to Achieve PR Success
Learn the secrets to standing out in a nonprofit world

Written by: Rochelle Brandvein

Comparing yourself to others is normal. You might wish you were taller like your friend Randy or could stay as fit as your friend Beth. But what about measuring your work success—particularly in the nonprofit world—to those who are killing it via publicity and always seem to be on the evening news…and interviewed by amajor podcaster…plus featured in a national publication? How is it possible that the media are covering your competition with so much zest while you watch from the sidelines without so much as a single nibble?
The Haves and The Have Nots
Don’t covet the larger nonprofits, which may be graced with a marketing person (or even team) who gets their name in the spotlight. Their size and resources shouldn’t keep you from achieving recognition for your own
solid work. Stop making excuses and start making headway....

How Can Facilities Managers Improve Sanitary Waste Practices?

(From our friends oversees)
Now that climate change has become harder to dismiss, many of us are more aware of how human activity impacts the environment. This gradual surge in awareness has targeted all aspects of life with an amplified call for changes in behaviour. Even small aspects of our daily routines can be harmful to the environment.  The sanitary sector is certainly not exempt from this and many women may take the creation
and disposal of these products for granted. However, these products can be a huge contributor to environmental damage. The Women’s Environmental Network has found that, on average, a woman will use more than 11,000 disposable menstrual products over her lifetime, which produces a staggering amount of waste. While periods are a reality that we cannot avoid, could we be managing the associated waste in a cleaner, eco-friendlier way? One of the most important things that facilities...

Women in STEM: Empowerment in Employment
STEM (standing for science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are industries usually taken
up by men. Women in these careers are low compared to men. It was said that in 2017, only 23 per
cent of females were in this industry. However, we have seen an increase as this is up by 105,470
and is higher than it was in 2016.
Careers in STEM are improving, with more women getting involved and taking up various roles in the
industry. This year has seen some of the biggest names and influential figures in the industry being
women, such as Kate Bouman, the woman who engineered the first image of a black hole. In this
article, we track how more women have entered STEM than any other field in the past four decades.
LinkedIn reported that more women got involved in STEM careers over the last four decades, than
any other. Philanthropist and former general manager at Microsoft, Melinda Gates, said: “Innovation
happens when we approach urgent challenges...

What is your story? Or in other words, what made you your awesome self you are today?

A lot of people would say I’m privileged to live where I do. And it is so true lol! But I would categorize it more in a grateful concept. My father grew up with absolutely nothing. Living on the streets, stealing surfers lunches from their backpacks early in the morning while they were in the water. He made a life for not only myself, but my mom, my other two siblings, and now my son. I grew up in a little beach town called San Clemente located in Southern California. And it is my own little paradise. My family always jokes about how we live in CandyLand. When I look back and think of the person I was from early childhood, to adolescent year, to now being an adult and a mom. I can say I’m pretty much the same person. My mom and dad always say I’m a healer. I am highly emotional, and would like to think I am intuitive with others emotions. I can empathize with many. I’ve...

LEADERSHIP: How to Retain Millennial & Gen Z Women

leadership Dec 05, 2019

You’ve seen the headlines about millennials and generation z, in the workforce. But, what about this trophy debate? How much longer do we fight back on principal and avoid the obvious: times are changing.

How to Retain Millennial & Gen Z Women

By Heidi Ganahl

It’s not a question of “if” but rather “when” the promising new grad you just hired begins looking for her next job.

The numbers don’t lie: Generation Z and Millennial women are only staying at their jobs for an average of 18 months. In comparison, the national average for salaried employees is 4.6 years, according to an Economic News Release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The American workforce has changed dramatically since Millennials came on the scene. This phenomenon has left many of us wondering why the ways we engage, reward, and retain employees have not changed with it. Today, especially with a historically low national unemployment rate,...
